1. The Unexpected Discovery
The atmosphere in the house was thick enough to cut with a knife. Larry stood in the center of the living room, his arms folded tightly across his chest. He wasn’t just annoyed; he felt undermined. On the sofa, Brooke sat huddled under a blanket, her eyes darting between her father and Bethany.
The silence was broken when Larry’s eyes landed on the device in Brooke’s hand. It wasn’t supposed to be there. He had made it clear that the phone was confiscated, yet there it was—glowing in the dim light of the room.
2. The Confrontation Begins
“Bethany, what is this?” Larry’s voice was low, vibrating with a controlled heat.
Bethany didn’t flinch, but her posture stiffened. “It’s a phone, Larry. She’s going to Miami for a Sweet 16. She needs to take pictures. She needs to capture memories. Is that such a crime?”
“It’s about the principle,” Larry shot back, his voice rising. “We agreed she wasn’t ready. You went behind my back and handed it to her like I don’t even have a say in this house. You’re not just giving her a camera; you’re giving her a way to report back to you.”
3. Accusations of “Keeping Tabs”
Larry stepped closer, pointing toward the phone. “I know how you play, Bethany. You didn’t give her that phone for ‘memories.’ You gave it to her so you could call her every five minutes. You want to know where I am, who I’m talking to, and what we’re doing. You’re using a child to keep tabs on me.”
Bethany let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Keep tabs on you? Larry, I am your wife! I shouldn’t have to ‘keep tabs’ on my own husband. If I wanted to know what you were doing, I should be there with you. But instead, I’m being treated like a stranger.”
4. The Sharra Bombshell
The argument took a sharp turn when Larry dropped the news he had been holding back. “Well, maybe if you hadn’t broken my trust with the phone, things would be different. But here’s the reality: Sharra is coming on the trip.”
The color drained from Bethany’s face. “Your ex-wife? You’re taking Sharra to Miami, but you’re leaving me—your actual wife—at home?”
“It’s what Destiny wants,” Larry said firmly, his expression hardening. “She’s the mother of my kids, and she’s coming to help with the girls so I can actually enjoy the trip. Destiny feels uneasy with you right now because of all this drama you’re stirring up.”
5. A House Divided
“This is a joke,” Bethany whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and hurt. “You are choosing your ex-wife’s presence over your current wife’s respect. You’re rewarding her and punishing me.”
“I’m choosing peace,” Larry countered. “I’m choosing my daughter’s happiness on her Sweet 16. You keep talking about being the ‘wife,’ but you’re acting like a spy. Until you learn to respect the boundaries I set, this is how it has to be.”
6. The Final Standoff
Larry reached out and snatched the phone from Brooke’s hand, ignoring the girl’s protest. He looked back at Bethany one last time. “Sharra is on her way over to pick them up and do their hair. If you want to be part of this family, start acting like you’re on the same team as me, not playing against me.”
He walked out of the room, leaving Bethany standing in the middle of the living room, the silence returning, but this time, it felt much heavier than before.
